Sewer overflows and aging wastewater system infrastructure are growing concerns across our nation. KUB, like many other utilities, is under a federal Consent Decree to make system improvements. KUB addresses wastewater issues with Partners Acting for a Cleaner Environment (PACE 10).
The $530 million, ten-year wastewater system improvement program works to clean up area waterways and meet increasingly strict regulatory requirements. Since its launch in 2004, PACE 10 has helped decrease the number of sewer overflows significantly. Substantial modifications required to two of KUB’s wastewater treatment plants will increase total spending to nearly $650 million by June 30, 2021.
The program includes a mix of ongoing maintenance programs, replacement and rehabilitation projects, and wet weather wastewater storage. Projects are under way throughout Knoxville and Knox County.
PACE 10 also works to give customers simple tips on protecting their property and our environment. Tips range from how to maintain your sewer lateral to how to properly dispose of cooking grease to prevent sewage backups into your home.
